Lambton Public Health’s West Nile virus surveillance program has confirmed that mosquitoes collected from a trap located in Oil Springs on August 12th have tested positive for the virus.
This is the first positive result of West Nile in Lambton County this year. No positive human cases in Lambton or Ontario have been confirmed.
Dr. Sudit Ranade, Lambton’s Medical Officer of Health, recommends residents to take precautions to prevent exposure to mosquitoes and to get rid of any mosquito breeding sites on their property.
The best way to reduce mosquito breeding areas include, draining areas of standing or stagnant water on your property, removing old tires, turn over pails, toys and wheelbarrows, changing water in bird baths weekly and to keep eaves clear to avoid trapped water.
