Motion to Support Legal Aid in CK

In the face of provincial funding cuts, municipal council is being asked to step up to the plate to support the Chatham-Kent Legal Clinic.

The provincial government’s 2019 Budget has cut funding to Legal Aid Ontario by $133 Million – which is a 35% reduction in provincial funding – retroactive to April 1st.

A motion is being presented at tonight’s council meeting, asking the municipality for a letter to be sent to area MPPs, the Attorney General, and Premier Doug Ford.

Officials say cuts will result in a reduction of critical legal services to low income residents in our community resulting in adverse social and economic consequences for the Municipality served by the Clinic.
