Provincial police in Chatham-Kent are asking drivers to slow down in constriction zones following six collisions along Highway 401 in less than a month.

The Ontario Provincial Police said all six collisions have taken place in construction zones on the highway within the municipality.

Most recently, officers responded to a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 401 in Tilbury, after four transport trucks collided on Monday. One person was taken to hospital with minor injuries and the westbound lanes of the highway were closed for close to four hours.

As well, officers responded to another multi-vehicle crash further east near Ridgetown last week on Thursday. Police said three commercial vehicles and two passengers vehicles collided in the eastbound lanes at Victoria Road. Two people suffered minor injuries and two drivers are facing charges for offences under the Highway Traffic Act.

Police officials are urging motorists to be prepared for traffic slowdowns in construction zones and to drive accordingly. Drivers are also reminded that all fines are doubled in construction zones.

The OPP is also asking that all drivers follow the tips listed below:

  • Expect the unexpected. Drivers should be ready to encounter slowed or stopped traffic in these zones due to lane reductions necessary to facilitate roadwork.
  • Always drive at the posted reduced speed limit and keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you.
  • Don’t tailgate – sudden stops are common in construction zones.
  • Watch for workers, new signs, traffic signals, pavement markings, or uneven pavement.
