Multiple Marine Incidents Prompt Warning From OPP

Following a high number of marine-related incidents, provincial police are urging everyone to use caution on Ontario’s waterways.

The Ontario Provincial Police said officers from various detachments were called out to multiple incidents on OPP-patrolled waterways over the weekend.

Authorities said falling overboard and capsized vessels remain the leading causes of marine death each year. Alcohol or drug impairment, operator inexperience, and not wearing a lifejacket are also among the contributing factors.

The OPP is urging the public to take precautions to prevent tragedy such as wearing a lifejacket, checking the weather forecast, and ensure vessels are functioning and equipped. Swimmers should never venture into the water alone, children should always be supervised closely, and posted signs and warnings should be obeyed at all times.

Boaters are also asked to familiarize themselves with the Safe Boating Guide, which can be found by clicking here.
