Municipal Naming Policy Put in Place

The municipality has passed a new naming policy.

Proposed by Wallaceburg resident Craig McNeil, the naming policy allows residents to propose a name change of a building or structure in honour of a local resident.

Ward 5 Councillor Carmen McGregor says the policy still needs a bit more work.

“What needs to happen and what Craig McNeil wanted was to establish a committee to be able to look at and recognize people, deserving people that should have their recognition,” McGregor explains. “Whether it be plaques or naming of buildings or benches, whatever.”

McGregor says the policy doesn’t address setting up those committees. She plans to work with McNeil to get a committee organized in Wallaceburg to act as a template for other communities.

A form will be posted to the municipal website next week, allowing a community committee to submit proposals for naming a building.
