In the wake of a collision near Dresden Area Central School this week, municipal officials will be taking a closer look at the area’s pedestrian crossing.

A 9-year-old boy was taken to hospital after being struck by a vehicle after school on Monday.

Mayor Darrin Canniff says a review is conducted every time there is an incident.

“Certainly we will look at the issue and if there’s some way we can improve upon that, if there’s lighting issues (for example,) we’ll certainly look at that, we want to be as safe as possible.”

Canniff says every time there is an accident at an intersection or crosswalk, a safety review is launched to see what caused the collision and whether any potential issues can be dealt with from a municipal standpoint.

The previous municipal government cancelled the adult crossing guard program in 2016, and a crosswalk light was installed in front of Dresden Area Central School on North Street in the spring of 2017.

Canniff says regardless of the circumstances for this and any other collision, drivers need to pay closer attention when passing through school safety zones.

“We need to be cognizant of what’s going on around us because kids don’t always follow the rules,” Canniff says. “We have to be aware of that as drivers as whole, but at crosswalks on whatever road you’re on, just be a little more careful watching for kids.”
