Chatham-Kent council made land use policy changes to the official plan to allow for the development of a significant subdivision in Chatham.
The development is proposed to be built on what is currently agriculture land directly north of Erickson Arena and Chatham-Kent Secondary School and will include 108 single detached homes and 50 row house townhomes. The developer of the 20 acres is Mohawk Farms Ltd.
Neighbours had issues with the proposed development, including increased traffic concerns along Delaware Avenue and the density of the development. They also had concerns that area schools would become overwhelmed with an influx of new students.
Due to the number of concerns, council first voted on whether to defer on making a decision and get more public consultation and analysis. Ward Six Councillor Conor Allin brought in the motion to defer because he said more information and answers were needed to move forward. That motion failed.
The final vote on the land use policy changes passed with a 15-2 vote.
