One of Wallaceburg’s most travelled bridges is set to close at the beginning of next month.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent said the Murray Street Bridge over the Sydenham River will close to vehicular traffic on November 7 to allow for the rehabilitation of the span. One sidewalk will remain open for pedestrians.

The municipality said one lane is expected to reopen to traffic on December 19. However, the bridge will be unable to open to allow large vessels to pass on the Sydenham for the duration of construction, which is expected to be completed in April 2023.

Landform Civil Infrastructures Ltd. has been secured as the contractor for the $1.9 million rehabilitation project.

While the bridge is closed, there will be two detours in place to direct traffic around the site.
