A new housing development is coming to Wallaceburg.
Mayor Darrin Canniff says a developer, whose name has yet to be publicly released, plans to build a series of apartment buildings at 7048 Baseline Road.
At its meeting next Monday, council will consider a proposal to sever a property to create a new 5.4-acre site.
If council approves the land severance, it will mark the first step toward creation of a multi-phase development to be known as Royal Ridge Residences, which will be a five-storey building with plans for at least two more apartment buildings coming in time.
“They plan on building up to three of them in phases, the first one’s going to have a gym and various amenities, it’s going to be a really nice apartment complex,” Canniff says. “He’s been developing across Chatham-Kent, he’s had his eye on Wallaceburg for a while and with a little encouragement, he’s building in Wallaceburg.”
It’s the first new development in Wallaceburg in quite some time, Canniff says primarily due to the lack of available land.
“There’s certainly a market in Wallaceburg, he’s very well aware of it, I’m going to be encouraging him to get this started and construct this as soon as possible.”
The initial project will include 85 units and other amenities, and will be a mix of 1 and 2 bedroom suites.
Canniff says it’s just the first of many steps towards a housing boom in the community.
“Hopefully over the next several months a lot of things will be happening in Wallaceburg, I anticipate Wallaceburg to be a construction boom town in 2023, there’s going to be tons of construction going on.”
The development will require further municipal approval for zoning amendments and site plan before it proceeds.
