New Campaign Offers Support in Vulnerable Situations

A local organization is teaming up with a national retailer to support those trying to escape violent or vulnerable situations.

Chatham-Kent Victim Services is teaming up with Loblaw to launch a campaign called “Ask for Angela,” offering help to residents who feel unsafe, whether they are experiencing intimate partner violence or feel threatened in public spaces.

The ‘Ask for Angela’ campaign, originally established in the United Kingdom in 2016, provides a discreet way for individuals to seek help by using the code-phrase “Is Angela here?” When someone asks for Angela at participating venues, trained staff will help by connecting them with Victim Services staff and volunteers.

“We are thrilled to partner with Loblaw to bring the ‘Ask for Angela’ campaign to Chatham-Kent,” said Kate do Forno, Executive Director of Chatham-Kent Victim Services in a news release. “This initiative will provide a vital resource for individuals who may find themselves in uncomfortable or dangerous situations while out in the community,”

Locally, participating locations include the Real Canadian Superstore in Chatham as well as all Shoppers Drug Mart and No Frills stores across Chatham-Kent. Staff at each participating store will receive comprehensive training to ensure they can effectively respond to individuals in need.
