Stricter provincial rules for carbon monoxide alarms are coming in the new year, and Chatham-Kent fire officials want to ensure local residents are prepared.
Beginning on January 1, 2026, carbon monoxide (CO) alarms will be required in more locations in houses, apartments, condominiums, and rental units under the updated Ontario Fire Code.
Officials with Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue are encouraging everyone to ensure their home meets the updated requirements.
“Carbon monoxide is called the silent killer for a reason, it’s invisible, odourless, and can be deadly,” says Fire Chief Chris Case in a news release. “These new rules will save lives by ensuring alarms are installed where they’re needed most. We urge every homeowner, tenant, and property manager to act now and protect their families.”
In houses, apartments and condos, CO alarms must be installed next to each sleeping area and on every storey of the home or unit with a fuel-burning appliance or fireplace. This includes units heated with a fuel-burning appliance or fireplace that is located outside of the unit, as well as public corridors.
Any resident needing assistance with their CO alarms is encouraged to contact CKFR for a CHiRP Home Alarm Check by clicking here.
