A newly announced cross-lake truck ferry service will soon be transporting goods between Ohio and Wheatley.

The Port of Cleveland and Milo Harbour Inc. in Wheatley have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to create a direct maritime cargo connection across Lake Erie that will service manufacturers, shippers, trucking companies, and logistics partners.

The Cross-Lake Truck Ferry Project is designed to improve supply-chain resilience by reducing dependence on congested highway and rail networks, while also reducing highway congestion and lessening wear on regional transportation infrastructure.

CK Mayor Darrin Canniff said the MOU provides an exciting opportunity for the municipality.

“A direct freight connection across Lake Erie has the potential to attract investment, support local businesses and create new opportunities for economic growth,” he said. “We’re excited to learn more about the project and better understand what it could mean for Chatham-Kent’s economic development, infrastructure, agriculture, and future investment across Chatham-Kent.”

The service will accommodate up to 300 round-trip truckloads per day, with an estimated one-way transit time of around two to three hours.

The ferry is expected to be operational in early 2028.
