A new partnership is helping local children improve their reading and writing.
Thanks to funding provided by councillors Brock McGregor and Amy Finn through the Ward Funding Program, two new Early Literacy Stations have been added to the Chatham-Kent Public Library branches in Chatham and Tilbury.
The stations include child-friendly dedicated computers with child-sized keyboards and mice that provide safe, interactive, and educational digital learning. Each station comes loaded with French and English educational games that foster foundational literacy and math skills such as letter and number recognition, phonics, rhyming, and storytelling.
While touring library branches as a Board member, Councillor Amy Finn noted that Tilbury’s Early Literacy Station was out of order. “Learning that these specialized computers are important to many children who use the library, the need for them to be replaced quickly was essential,” she said.
Councillor Brock McGregor has a personal connection to the program. “These computers and the fish tank are highlights of my youngest’s library visits in Chatham.”
The Councillor Ward Funding Grant Program supports capital assets and provides financial assistance to individuals, community groups, or not-for-profit projects that address a community need.
