A local group is taking cues from Chatham’s history to celebrate the reopening of the town’s Third Street Bridge.

The Historic Downtown Chatham-BIA will be hosting an event called Bridgerama Day 2022 to mark the reopening of the bridge, which has been closed for rehabilitation for the better part of a year.

The Third Street Bridge has been closed since April 26, 2021, for a $14 million rehabilitation project. The project has seen several delays over the past year, with the bridge not expected to be in service until the end of June of this year.

While an official date for this year’s festivities has not yet been finalized, organizers are working with the Municipality of Chatham-Kent and the bridge contractor to have the event coincide with the reopening.

Organizers have based the event on a three-day celebration that took place in 1962 to commemorate the first opening of the Third Street Bridge.

Organizers said the event will include music and other performances, sales, fun for children, booths with handmade and homegrown items, a bridge walkover, a boat sail-by, and a treasure hunt.
