Through a collaboration between non-profit groups and healthcare professionals in Chatham-Kent, a new mobile app is now available to help those experiencing a mental health crisis.

Launching in correlation with Mental Health Week from May 1-7, the “Be Safe” app connects users with mental health resources in a time of need. It can also develop an individualized safety plan for current or future use and access a list of local and national resources that fit users’ needs.

Megan Walker, a therapist with Youth Wellness Hubs Ontario, Chatham-Kent, said the need for mental health support in the municipality is high and the app makes it easier for everyone to find support.

“People don’t always know how to access mental health resources, and the Be Safe app is a resource that will help improve community awareness,” she said in a news release.

The app was developed by the Mental Health Social Planning and Action Table, which is made up of members from LinCK, CK Public Health, Youth Wellness Hubs Ontario, and St. Clair College among others.

“The app is free of cost and brings the user to local resources across Chatham-Kent, which helps increase awareness of mental health supports that are available, as well as how to access them when needed,” said Walker.

The “Be Safe” app is currently available for free on Apple and Android devices.
