A new advocacy group has formed in Dresden amid the community’s ongoing battle against a proposed landfill site north of the town.

Founders of the group Dresden Together said the not-for-profit organization was created to address the unique needs of their small community.

“All of us are pretty involved in our communities. We’ve made a lot of good connections within our municipality and provincially,” said group member Martha Fehr. “We just want to use those connections to help our community.”

The current focus of the group is preventing a GTA-based waste management company from establishing a large-scale landfill one kilometre from the town on Irish School Road.

York1, which owns the property, has made two applications to the Environment Ministry to amend the existing waste processing site Environmental Compliance Approval for a 35-hectare waste disposal site with an 8-hectare landfilling area and a 0.8-hectare waste processing site. However, the company has since been ordered to complete a comprehensive environmental assessment.

“Our number one goal right now is stopping that big development… but we’ll still be here for years to come to meet the needs of our community,” said Fehr.

While the group is not currently looking for monetary donations, organizers are asking community members to consider donating their time and support.

“We want to work together with the other groups, businesses and our elected officials who have helped us all along and just work together for the needs of the community,” said Wendy Vercauteren with Dresden Together.
