Starting January first, new provincial regulations go into effect to increase transparency and strengthen consumer protection when it comes to tow trucks and vehicle storage services.
The changes include having permission from the consumer or someone acting on their behalf before towing or storing a vehicle, publicly disclose rates and other information such as the provider’s name and telephone number on tow trucks as well as in places of business, and allowing consumers to access their towed vehicles to remove personal property at no charge between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on business days
Figures show there are about 12-hundred tow truck business in Ontario with more than three thousand tow truck drivers on the roads.
