The rebirth and renewal of Wallaceburg’s hospital has been translated into a new public art installation for the community to enjoy.
The sculpture, entitled Healing Hands, was unveiled at the Wallaceburg site of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance on Monday by local artist Tyson Carr. The piece is located on the corner of Margaret Avenue and Dora Drive, on the front lawn of the hospital.
The art installation depicts a human hand, gracefully reaching upward with a butterfly carefully balanced on the index finger. Sculpted from concrete, sand from the Sydenham River, and stainless steel, the piece is engineered to last for generations.
“It was just elemental aspects… all of these things coming together,” said Carr. “The butterfly is a symbol of hope, renewed perspective and transformation in the community.”
Carr, a multidisciplinary artist from Chatham, added that the sculpture is meant to mirror the resilience of the human experience and the dedication of healthcare workers.
The installation of Healing Hands is the final part of CKHA’s art initiative, which was launched in 2024 with the intention of creating calming, reflective spaces throughout both hospital sites.
“I think it’s a beautiful thing when you can use your life skills to do something for the community, for the people, for their enjoyment,” said Carr.
This initiative was made possible in part through funding from the Municipality of Chatham-Kent.
