The Chatham-Kent YMCA is launching a new program to help ensure suspended students don’t fall through the cracks.
In partnership with the St. Clair Catholic District School Board (SCCDSB), the YMCA will begin offering its “Back on Track” program in September.
The academic suspension program provides a safe, supportive space where suspended students in Grades 7 through 12 can reflect on challenges, strengthen social skills, and develop strategies for moving forward.
“This initiative ensures no student falls between the cracks,” said Jen Morrow, SCCDSB superintendent of education, in a news release. “The positive ripple effects – academically, socially, and emotionally – will be felt in our schools and community for years to come.”
The program will be customized to each individual student to address the root causes of their suspension and build both academic and personal skills.
Youth support workers will also work closely with parents, guardians, and schools by maintaining daily communication.
Back on Track was made possible through grant funding from The Joyce Family Foundation.
