Municipal council could take another step towards taking over some properties within the Wheatley evacuation zone.
A report to council tonight recommends that Chatham-Kent’s CAO and Director of Legal Services be authorized to move forward with the purchase of five properties in downtown Wheatley in the wake of the 2021 gas explosion.
Municipal officials have been in negotiations with property owners on Talbot Road East to buy up the remaining properties within the evacuation zone that have been deemed inappropriate for re-development.
The report says the cost to purchase the properties will be funded by a $3-million provincial grant and the remainder from the municipality’s strategic reserves.
