No Automatic Recount in CK’s Municipal Election

Results from Monday night’s municipal election have now been finalized.

Chief Returning Officer and Director of Municipal Governance, Judy Smith, says there has been no change in the results as they were posted shortly after 9 o’clock Monday night.

There were 24,546 ballots cast (30.56 % of eligible voters).

There were 34,722 ballots cast (45.% of eligible voters) during 2018, 32,783 ballots cast (42.1% of eligible voters) during the 2014 election and 32,398 (39.9% of eligible voters) during 2010.

Final unofficial results were compiled and published online within 60 minutes of polls closing on Monday evening.

“I would like to thank the 350 election workers who did their jobs efficiently and who made it possible for us to provide timely and accurate information to the public,” Smith said.

While there were some questions about the potential for a recount with some council positions decided by just a few votes, the Municipal Elections Act only allows for an automatic recount if there is a tie.

Former councillor Mary Clare Latimer was unseated by political newcomer Ryan Doyle in South Kent by a single vote, while Amy Finn held onto her seat in Chatham with just a 10 vote lead over Carson Warrener.

Across Chatham-Kent, there were three declined ballots recorded, but none rejected.

More detailed election results and statistics, including a breakdown of poll-by-poll, advance, and online voting will be released on the municipality’s election website in the next few days.
