Municipal council is looking at designating the North Buxton Community Church as a heritage property.

The church, built in 1867, has had a somewhat turbulent few years.

The property is under the ownership of the British Methodist Episcopal Church, which tried to evict the local congregation a year and a half ago.

The congregation broke away from the BME in 2003 to become an independent church but the property remained under the larger organization’s domain, which is the subject of an ongoing legal dispute.

Council now has two options – either not proceeding with the designation and just receive the report as information, or pass a motion to move forward and issue a notice of intention to designate and see if any objections are filed through the Conservation Review Board.
