An award-winning heritage event is returning to North Buxton for another year.
The 101st North Buxton Homecoming kicks off on Friday and runs until Monday, featuring sporting events, vendor markets, historical reenactments, and musical performances.
In addition, a homecoming parade will take place on the Monday, beginning on Eighth Line and ending at the North Buxton Community Park.
The theme of this year’s Homecoming is “celebrating the music of Buxton.”
The homecoming event began in 1924 as a one-day reunion for former slaves who came to Canada as part of the Underground Railroad. It has since grown into a four-day celebration that blends African-Canadian heritage, family reunions, children’s activities, and small-town hospitality.
Last year’s homecoming marked the event’s centennial year and it was honoured with an award from the Ontario Heritage Trust and the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario for demonstrating community leadership by driving heritage tourism to one of the province’s most significant historical Black communities.
