The number of Chatham-Kent residents infected by the measles virus has more than doubled since the beginning of April.

According to a recent report from Ontario Public Health, 47 measles cases were reported by Chatham-Kent Public Health between April 2 and April 9.

Since October 18, 2024, a total of 90 cases have been reported in the municipality, which accounts for 11 per cent of the 816 measles cases reported across the province.

All but 25 of Ontario’s measles cases have been linked to a multi-jurisdictional outbreak following an exposure to a travel-related case in New Brunswick.

Health officials said the sharp increase in cases and spread of the virus in recent weeks is attributed to continued exposure and transmission among people who have not been immunized.

Measles symptoms can include fever, runny nose, cough, drowsiness, irritability, and red eyes. A red rash appears on the face three to seven days after the start of the above symptoms.

Anyone who is experiencing these symptoms and needs to visit a healthcare provider, emergency department, or walk-in clinic, is asked to call ahead before attending.
