Nursing Home Cuts Thrust into the Spotlight

Union members rallied outside Copper Terrace Nursing Home in Chatham Wednesday afternoon in response to recent layoffs and shift cuts to the workers.

Three full time registered Practical Nurses were let go and they cut hours for the other nurses and personal support workers.

Tullio DiPonti, the President of Health Care Workers Unifor local 2458 says they wanted to spread the message about a major problem.

“It’s going to do with cuts, the layoffs that are going on at this particular home,” Diponti says. “Plus through the whole system of long term care, we’re working short all the time. We want to make sure the people in Chatham for this particular home, and right across Ontario, they realize we’re at a crisis right now in long term care.”

While the company is blaming the moves on fewer patients, DiPonti says the union has confirmed the current occupation rate is at 99%.
