Several police officers have been recognized for demonstrating care and compassion that likely saved the lives of two suicidal individuals.
Chatham-Kent Police Service Special Constable Randi Hull took a call after a distraught woman called police headquarters on October 27, 2022. Police say the woman was driving in the municipality at the time and was having suicidal thoughts of swerving head-on into another vehicle.
Hull was able to build a rapport and calm the woman to ensure she wouldn’t follow through with her suicidal thoughts. The woman on the phone was eventually located by officers unharmed.
A similar situation also took place on March 18, 2023 when officers responded to the Fifth Street bridge at around 11:30 p.m. to find a male who said he wanted to end his life.
Constable Shaide Pallister spoke to the male as other officers and emergency crews prepared for a potential water rescue. After speaking with him for more than 20 minutes, Constable Pallister was able to convince the male to come off the ledge. He was then taken to a total hospital for treatment.
Special Constable Randi Hull and Constable Pallister, along with other officers and communications operators, were all presented with Letters of Recognition from the deputy chief during a CK Police Services Board meeting on June 21.
