High winds and heavy smoke hampered the efforts of Chatham-Kent fire fighters battling a blaze on Middle Line.

Crews from Station 16 Raleigh South were called to the property around 2:30 Monday afternoon, where they found an attached garage fully engulfed with flames spreading to the home.

One occupant was rescued from the second floor of the house by three off-duty fire fighters who were the first to arrive at the scene.

Stations #18 Blenheim, #17 Merlin, and tanker support from Stations #15 Raleigh North and #12 Harwich North were also on scene to assist.

No one was hurt, and damage has been estimated at $400,000.

No word yet on what sparked the fire.
