A bit of labour peace in Ontario’s education system.

High school teachers have accepted the government’s proposal for binding arbitration, ending the threat of a possible strike for at least the next three years.

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) says its members voted “overwhelmingly” to enter into a proposal to continue bargaining with the Ontario government until October 27. Officials say if a deal cannot be reached, all remaining issues would be settled by binding arbitration.

Last week, the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) reached a tentative central agreement for 3,500 education worker members with the Council of Trustees’ Associations and the Ontario government.

However, there is still no deal in place for the union’s 80,000 teacher and occasional teacher members with strike votes continuing until October 17th.
