2021 was a tragic year on Ontario roads.
New figures from the Ontario Provincial Police show 315 people were killed on OPP-patrolled roads last year, up 3% from the year before.
Speeding was the worst culprit, claiming 81 lives province-wide and marking a 10-year high in speed-related road deaths in Ontario.
Authorities say fatalities linked to inattentive drivers were up 29%, while alcohol and drug-related deaths were down by almost 50%.
Overall, OPP officers responded to 60,544 crashes in 2021, an 8% increase over 2020.
On the water, OPP responded to 23 fatal marine incidents last year which claimed 27 lives and marked a 16% decrease in fatalities over 2020.
Twenty-two people died in off-road vehicle incidents in 2021, down slightly from the year before.
