Provincial police are welcoming a new addition to their Canine Unit in Lambton County.
The Ontario Provincial Police said canine “Tackle” has joined the unit after recently completing his training in tracking, evidence searching, building clearing and criminal apprehension.
The 2-year-old German Shepherd is expected to complete his testing on odour recognition for drugs and firearms later this month.
The current OPP Canine Unit in Lambton County is made up of “Blitz” a police service dog and “Celaena” an explosives detection dog. Tackle will be replacing Blitz after his final testing is complete.
The OPP said Canine teams undergo rigorous training and testing before being utilized for front-line duties. Teams are also required to requalify on an ongoing basis.
