Provincial Police are issuing a word of warning as they mark ATV Safety Awareness Week.

The campaign, which runs through June 8, is a partnership between the OPP and Ontario Federation of ATV Clubs, promoting safe riding in off-roading communities throughout the province.

Authorities say 18 of the 34 people who died in OPP-investigated off-road vehicle incidents last year were not wearing helmets, a critical piece of equipment that would have given them life-saving protection.

Another 15 people were killed in collisions that involved drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

OPP officials are encouraging everyone who drives on an ATV to ensure they and any passengers are wearing an approved helmet, avoid speeding, and operate their vehicles with control and within their skill level – especially on unfamiliar or uneven terrain.

Parents/guardians of youths who are interested in taking up off-road vehicle driving are encouraged to enroll them in Ontario’s online ATV Training Course for Youth.
