Thousands of charges have been laid across southwestern Ontario as part of a Canada Day traffic campaign.
Officers with the West Region Ontario Provincial Police conducted a total of 5,097 traffic stops during the campaign between June 26 and July 5, laying 4,372 charges across 13 detachments.
Of the charges laid, 1,828 were for speeding, 304 were for failing to wear a seatbelt, and another 102 were for impaired driving.
During the campaign, officers highlighted the importance of lifesaving equipment such as seatbelts, helmets and personal flotation devices. Police worked to discourage unsafe driving behaviours, such as speeding, distracted driving and impaired driving.
