Police are urging drivers to keep safety top of mind over the Civic Holiday long weekend.
The Ontario Provincial Police says motorists are reminded to pay attention, wear a seatbelt, slow down, drive sober and move over for emergency vehicles.
During last year’s Civic Holiday long weekend in Ontario, 3,514 speeding charges, 512 seatbelt-related charges, 77 distracted driving charges and 204 impaired driving charges were laid. There were also nine vehicle-related fatalities.
Drivers are also reminded to slow down and move to the right side of the road when an emergency vehicle approaches with its emergency lights activated.
The OPP laid 170 additional charges last year for those who did not comply with Ontario’s Slow Down, Move Over law.
