More than 130 positive cases of COVID-19 have now been connected to outbreaks at London’s University Hospital.

As of Tuesday morning, 133 cases including 72 patients and 61 staff and health-care providers were linked to outbreaks within the London Health Science Centre location.

Additionally, 13 deaths have been associated with the outbreaks.

The LHSC website currently lists outbreaks within:

  • 5IP Cardiology and cardiology offices – Declared: December 5, 2020
  • 4IP General Medicine – Declared: November 10, 2020
The following outbreaks were declared as extensions of the original 4IP outbreak:
  • 4TU Multi-Organ Transplant Unit – Declared: November 27, 2020
  • 6IP Acute/Decant Medicine – Declared: November 24, 2020
  • 6IP Cardiovascular Surgery – Declared: November 27, 2020
  • 9IP Sub-Acute Medicine – Declared: November 24, 2020
  • 10IP Palliative Care/Sub-Acute Medicine – Declared: November 24, 2020

The LHSC says it is important to note that not all of the new cases being identified are through hospital-acquired transmission. They say COVID-19 is circulating in the community, and the additional precautions that include enhanced surveillance testing are identifying COVID-19 positive cases in both staff and patients who may have been asymptomatic.

Unit-level outbreaks for COVID-19 are declared, in partnership with the Middlesex-London Health Unit, as soon as there are two or more confirmed positive cases among patients or staff that could have possibly been acquired on an inpatient unit.
