The owners of a Dover Centre heritage home are requesting Chatham-Kent council remove the heritage designation from their home. Council will consider the request at tonight’s council meeting.
The owners of the home restored it to its former grandeur and have no plans on making changes to the house—but the homeowners said they are having a hard time finding affordable insurance due to the heritage designation.
In a letter to council, the homeowners of 7823 Bay Line said many insurers across southwestern Ontario are refusing to provide insurance due to the heritage designation.
Chatham-Kent’s heritage committee is asking council to deny the request, noting that there are local insurance companies that will insure designated properties at reasonable rates.
The house was constructed in 1897.
