The newly revamped Pain Court Water Tower could be the poster tower for a North American paint manufacturer.
The structure is up for Water Tower of the Year from the paint manufacturer, Tnemec (which is cement spelled backwards.)
Coating consultant Cameron Walker says there’s a lot of work that goes into these types of jobs, which are as much about performance as they are aesthetics.
“Water is the universal solvent in the world, it can be very aggressive on the steel structures, so we need to protect it over the 20-25 years that it’s going to be in service,” Walker says.
The $2.3 million project, which included the complete removal and replacement of the tank’s interior and exterior coating and various other improvements, just wrapped up a couple of weeks ago.
“It’s mostly for bragging rights, but also Tnemec puts together their Tank of the Year annual calendar,” Walker says. “The top 12 tanks make it into the calendar, but first place makes the cover.”
