Chatham-Kent has entered into an agreement with the University of Windsor with the hope of expanding learning opportunities for students in the municipality.

Municipal officials have signed a memorandum of understanding with the university to bring more students to Chatham-Kent for job placements, internships, and experiential learning.

“Ultimately we want to see a significant enhancement in post-secondary education here, and the University of Windsor was a very logical choice for us,” said Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff.

Leadership from the university have begun meetings with Chatham-Kent’s Department of Economic Development, Resident Attraction and Community, and the local Chamber of Commerce to discuss potential future partnership opportunities.

University of Windsor President Dr. Robert Gordon said the university wants to establish a greater presence in the region.

“We presently have an undergraduate program in nursing here in Chatham and I think there are opportunities that we’re pursuing to have… more University of Windsor students enrolled in undergraduate and potentially graduate programs here in the Chatham-Kent area,” he said. “Our hope is to actually have more and build up those relationships through the Chamber of Commerce, through small and medium-sized companies here in the region.”

The University of Windsor and St. Clair College signed a similar agreement in 2023 to offer a collaborative nursing program partnership within Chatham-Kent.
