A local organization is helping thousands of families in need get their kids ready to head back to school.

With donations from local residents and businesses, FreeHelpCK has been able to fill over 3000 backpacks with essential school supplies as part of Operation Backpack.

For those who have registered, pick-up in Wallaceburg will take place between 11am and noon today at CSN Holmes Collision at 720 Gillard Street.

In all, 1846 backpacks have been handed out to schools and families in Chatham, 422 in Wallaceburg, 221 in Tilbury, 197 in Ridgetown, 190 in Dresden, and 119 in Blenheim.

Organizers say thanks to some generous last-minute donations, an additional 200 backpacks will be handed out at the Downtown Chatham Centre on Friday from 11am until noon, first come, first served.
