Charges have been laid after a Chatham-Kent police officer was assaulted by a man wielding a steel pipe.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers were called to a Queen Street apartment in Chatham for a well-being check at around 4 p.m. on Thursday after someone reported hearing screams.

When police arrived, they located a man who was highly intoxicated and behaving aggressively. When officers attempted to ensure his safety, the man grabbed a steel pipe and held it in a threatening manner.

Despite repeated requests to drop the pipe, the man refused to comply. The officers were forced to use a Taser to safely take him into custody.

A 55-year-old Chatham man is now charged with assaulting a peace officer and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He was taken to police headquarters and held until sober. The accused will answer the charges in court in December.
