Those intending to visit Point Pelee National Park at the end of the month will need to make other plans.

Parks Canada and Caldwell First Nation will be conducting a deer cull between January 24-31, to ensure the long-term health of the park.

Parks Canada has been collaborating with Caldwell First Nation for a number of years to actively manage the deer population.

According to the park authority, a high population of white-tailed deer creates a serious threat to the forest and savannah health of the park, as well as the species that depend on these habitats. Based on current data, Parks Canada said the current deer herd population is higher than what the ecosystem can support.

The park will reopen to the public on February 1.
