Preparations are underway to plug the third and final well in downtown Wheatley as part of ongoing efforts to prevent further gas leaks.
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent said work crews will spend the next several days monitoring the site of the “APEC 1” well, following the installation of a conductor pipe earlier this week.
Contractors are also finalizing plans and have started preparations to plug the well, which is the closest to last summer’s explosion at 15 Erie St.
Once a work plan has been established, the well will be plugged with cement, which was also done with the previous two wells that had been found in the area.
The municipality said no gas emissions have been detected in the area since July 6.
If any residents detect the smell of gas at any time, they are asked to immediately call 911.
