Plans are coming together to get some Wheatley residents back into their homes – at least for a short time.

Municipal officials announced at last week’s pubic meeting they were working with building inspectors to determine which homes in the evacuation area were stable enough for owners to get in for an hour at a time to collect any valuables and winterize their properties.

“We are now actively engaged in discussions with insurance companies to determine if this involvement can be accomplished in a safe manner,” Thomas Kelly, General Manager of Infrastructure and Engineering says. “If feasible, the plan will be revised accordingly.”

Staff will be reaching out to home and business owners in the next few weeks to plan next steps. Child minding will be provided on Saturdays, while Pet and Wildlife Rescue will take care of any pets.

Meantime, Entegrus crews will be on site this week to remove hydro poles in preparing for more work in the area around 15 Erie Street North.
