Work is in full swing on a new public art mural adorning the side of the police station in downtown Chatham.

Local artist Sarah Steele began painting the mural at Chatham-Kent Police Service Headquarters at 24 Third St. early last week.

Initially announced back in August 2023, police officials said the mural will reflect the diversity and communal experiences of the community while acting as a catalyst for conversations and dialogue between police and CK residents.

Steele was selected as the artist for the project following a month-long online application process last year.

The mural was funded through the police mandatory issues reserve. Mayor Darrin Canniff and Councilor Marjorie Crew also contributed an additional $5,000 each through their portions of the Hydro One Community Benefit program, which is designated for recreational and art projects.

Police officials said the mural is expected to be completed sometime this week.
