An investigation into the cause of a fire that sent three police officers to hospital with smoke inhalation remains ongoing.

The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal has responded to 85 Pine Street in Chatham to determine the origin and cause of a fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters with Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue responded to the blaze shortly before 1 p.m. to find “active fire conditions” at the multi-unit residential building. Fire officials said the flames were quickly contained and extinguished to prevent further damage to the building.

As a result of the fire, three officers with the Chatham-Kent Police Service were treated at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance for minor smoke inhalation. All three have since been released.

No further injuries have been reported and a damage estimate has not been released.
