Chatham-Kent Police and OPP say they are not practicing random “essential travel” stops.
Several area drivers have complained in recent days about being pulled over by local law enforcement for “random checks” associated with COVID-19 protocol and essential travel.

Officially, both Chatham-Kent Police and the OPP say random stops are not being practiced.

A statement directly from the Chatham-Kent Police Service says:

“Our Police Service is currently focusing on education to ensure everyone understands the emergency orders. Randomly stopping vehicles to ensure compliance is not our current practice.”

The OPP advises there may be instances where officers have stopped vehicles for OTHER valid reasons and have also educated drivers and passengers on the importance of self-isolation and limiting travels in efforts to limit the spread of COVID-19.
