The Chatham-Kent Police Services Board is honouring the memory of a local officer who dedicated much of his life to helping others.

During a meeting on December 14, the board approved a $3,000 donation for the sixth annual Polar Plunge in support of Special Olympics Ontario.

The donation was made in memory of 62-year-old retired Constable Mike Currie, who passed away unexpectedly on October 13 while travelling abroad.

Currie retired from the force in 2016 but continued to advocate for causes close to his heart, particularly Special Olympics Ontario and the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

The Chatham-Kent Police Association has also committed to donating $1,000 to the upcoming charitable event.

The sixth annual Polar Plunge will be held on January 21, 2023, at Sons of Kent Brewing Co. in Chatham.
