Police Stop Suspended Driver, Seize Cocaine

A local man is facing a slew of driving and drug-related charges following a traffic stop in Chatham.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers stopped a vehicle on Joseph Street just after 6:30 a.m. on Saturday after getting a hit from their Automatic Licence Plate Recognition system.

Officers learned that the man behind the wheel was wanted on an outstanding warrant for failing to attend court, and he had been suspended from driving.

Authorities added that the attached licence plate was not registered to the vehicle and the vehicle was “unfit” to be on the road.

During a search, police also discovered 44 grams of suspected cocaine.

As a result, a 40-year-old Chatham man was arrested and charged with possession of a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking, driving while suspended, failing to wear a seatbelt, failing to provide a permit, driving without insurance, using an unauthorized licence plate, operating an unsafe vehicle, and failing to comply with an undertaking.

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing.
