Following one of the most deadly years on Ontario roads in more than a decade, provincial police are urging drivers to use caution and avoid taking unnecessary risks heading into the Victoria Day long weekend.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police, 359 people were killed in crashes on provincial roads in 2022, the highest number of fatalities in the last 16 years.

OPP Constable Brett Phair said a significant number of road deaths every year are linked to impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and not wearing a seatbelt.

“These situations can arise at a moment’s notice. It’s important for all drivers to be as attentive as possible and change their driving behaviours according to the conditions of the road, weather and traffic,” said Phair.

The OPP along with its policing partners across the province is taking part in Canada Road Safety Week from May 16-22, with officers targeting all forms of poor and careless driving.

“If we can avoid taking any unnecessary risks and comply with all the traffic laws, that’s going to give us the best chance for a positive outcome,” said Phair.
