Residents near a vacant school in Chatham will notice a heavier than usual police presence today.

Officers with the Chatham-Kent Police Service, including the Critical Incident Response Team, will be taking part in training at the former St Ursula Catholic School on Lacroix Street.

Authorities say there is no cause for alarm, and although officers may be carrying weapons, there is no live ammunition being used as part of the emergency response preparedness exercise.

The decommissioned school closed its doors in June, 2024 and, thanks to an agreement between the municipal police force and St Clair Catholic District School Board, has been used for training purposes since last September.
