As thousands of students in the region head back to school this week, provincial police are urging everyone to prioritize safety on roads and in school zones.
The Ontario Provincial Police are asking motorists to be vigilant in school zones and be mindful of children walking or riding their bicycles to and from school. Drivers are also reminded to stop for school buses when the red lights are flashing and when the stop arm is extended. Failing to do so is dangerous and can result in a $400-$2000 fine and six demerit points.
Parents are asked to encourage their children to avoid distractions while walking to school, use a crosswalk, obey crossing guards and look both ways before crossing the street. Any child riding their bicycle to school should also ensure they wear a helmet and follow the rules of the road.
While back-to-school season is an exciting time, police officials said everyone has to do their part to make it a safe school year.
